Humans vs AI: Workplace Battles

Uncategorized Jul 09, 2019

In 2014, the great Stephen Hawking made a bold, alarming, and disturbing statement,

"The development of full artificial intelligence (AI) could spell the end of the human race." (Source)

Thankfully, 5 years on, we’re still here. It’s true, however, that AI and other forms of technology are much more prevalent now than it was in 2014. In this blog, we’ll be sharing how humans can still play an integral part in businesses and the way we work.

One of the most important things to recognise is that AI should be developed to augment humans, not to replace us altogether. Humans should continue to develop critical thinking ability and problem-solving skills. AI and other technology could then be brought to execute the ideas. For example, Amazon now has 100,000 robots in operation, which has shortened training for holiday workers to less than two days.

One industry that is suffering from job loss as a result of AI is journalism. Automated news articles are being published by the most significant sources of news such as the Associated Press. With a generic template being used, the AI can simply generate the missing information and publish articles immediately. This is commonly used for sports articles and election results, among countless others. The benefit? There wouldn't be any grammatical errors for one. For news agencies, it’s about who publishes the article first, and AI will always win that race. What humans can do that AI will struggle with, however, is the ability to write articles with fresh angles and perspectives, going more into feature stories rather than straight up hard news. These will make for more interesting reads, but requires much more time and effort, and perhaps a little too much for most companies.

Take this as a warning, but also an opportunity, to realise that we cannot stay stagnant. You need to understand that to remain relevant; you need to adopt a lifelong learning approach to continuously develop yourself, and identify the skills you need to succeed in this technology-driven world. Skills that we have mentioned earlier, such as critical thinking, innovation and creativity. Apart from critical thinking, now more than ever, humans need to display empathy. Feelings, emotions, and both literally and figuratively, a human touch, is something AI cannot replace.

Something you can do to avoid staying stagnant is to have a growth mindset — one which gets you going for the rest of the day. Here at JumpStakes, we're giving you a way to change your mindset and your productivity levels!
